Louis Armstrong may be the most significant jazz musician of the twentieth century.  Armstrong began changing the face of popular music in 1925 with his recording ensemble, the Hot Fives, bringing unprecedented virtuosity to solos, an effortless swing to his phrasing, and a singing style so extraordinary it would inspire generations to come.  This course explores the Hot Fives, whose recordings are among jazz’s greatest, and examines the group’s impact on popular music.
