This class explores contemporary memoirs by writers from diverse social backgrounds.  How do authors translate lived experiences of childhood and family life, immigration, war, personal trauma, work and professional life, parenthood, and politics into compelling literary works?  How do they chronicle the creation of complex identities shaped by race, class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and geography?  Analyzing both the achievements and the limitations of the memoir genre, we will discuss how authors map the emotional landscape of private life while addressing broader themes in history, politics, and culture. This class features four very recent books, including a beautifully rendered graphic memoir.)  Come share your ideas with other passionate readers in a stimulating yet relaxed environment.  Reading list: The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, by Sherman Alexie, Real American by Julie Lythcott-Haims, and Hunger by Roxane Gay.

Vocal technique will be taught through songs from a range of vocal literature — from pop to Broadway to classical.  Opportunities to perform solo will be offered in a master-class setting.  Choral singing in harmony will also be included, based on the abilities and the number of students in the course.  We will also focus on sight reading and theory for the beginning singer.  This class will end with a recital of solos, duets, and choral works covered in class.  All abilities and levels of experience are welcome in this non-threatening opportunity to raise your voice in song!

Unprecedented military defeat in Vietnam, a toppled president, charismatic leaders assassinated, the worst riots in U.S. history — all that, and 1968 had barely begun.  This 2-part class covers the most tumultuous year in recent history, in which passionate hopes and searing tragedies alternated on almost a daily basis.  Examine seismic shifts beyond our shores, from the May student-worker protests that drove the French republic to the brink of collapse and De Gaulle into hiding, to the Prague Spring that brought hope for reforming the Communist bloc.  Watch as a Democratic convention is torn apart by protests and violence, just days after Soviet tanks crush Czechs’ freedom.  See how a segregationist candidate shattered the New Deal coalition, and still a bold about-face by a pro-war Democrat led to a photo finish with Richard Nixon.  The course mixes great speeches and classic images with little-known accounts of the behind-the-scenes decisions that led to some of the most shocking events in our time.  Always up for discussion is whether a shift in a single leader’s judgment, a few votes, or a single bullet, might have changed the course of history.
