This course will cover the life and personality of J.S. Bach, one of the greatest composers ever, and the musical traditions and composers from whom he drew his inspiration.  Bach will be explained as a man of his time, influenced by the trends and traditions of the High Baroque period. He synthesized in his music the various national styles and compositional techniques of his day.  By listening to examples taken from some of his most popular works, students will gain appreciation for the vast range of his output.
