Sorcery and Subterfuge in Fiction

ID : 7376
« back to classes page

Fiction is doubly beguiling; initial infatuation engenders a second level of enticement: the desire to grasp its means of working its wiles.  Moving beyond preoccupation with plot to actual analysis uncovers meaningful eccentricities in treatment of time and sequence, exploitation of props and decor, and even of silence, i.e. breaks, blanks, drift in the prose.  Class will probe works by ten distinguished writers (among them James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, John Cheever, and Alice Munro).
