In this three-course series, jazz saxophonist, composer and educator Daniel Blake will lead a wide-ranging exploration of jazz history. The discussion will place a special focus on New York City, the city where jazz was transformed into the modern, urban form of art/entertainment we know today. In these courses, students will learn practical musical skills to better appreciate this music, as well as important historical context for understanding how and why this music came to be. Each 2-week series will cover a distinct era and group of artists in jazz, with the third series focusing on current trends in jazz. No prior musical knowledge is expected; the class is welcome to all listeners of all levels!
