For emergent photographers with DSLR and hand-held cameras who want to deepen their understanding of digital imaging and learn to use their gear while taking pictures, this indoor/outdoor course is the journey to take. Following the initial presentation in a classroom, the class will go outside to photograph nature, portraits, groups, macro close-ups, and more.  Students will practice professional methods while using various flash techniques and different focal length lenses, manipulating depth-of-field, capturing movement and studying composition.  Bring fully charged cameras along with accessories to each class.  For a variety of abilities, from beginner to “almost advanced,” this course will help you become familiar with your equipment, discover new techniques, and deepen your understanding of the digital photography process.

  For the major muscle groups, these free-weight exercises will increase muscular strength and endurance and will improve flexibility, range of motion, and body tone. Participants will learn to exercise safely and correctly. All ages and levels of fitness are welcome; progress will be according to ability. Bring an exercise mat and 1- 5 pound weights. Inspire your creativity and connect with the natural world as you develop drawing skills.  A variety of art media will be introduced including pencil, ink, charcoal,and pastel.  Lessons will focus on line, value, composition, perspective, and color.  Still life arrangements will be composed from natural elements, including flowers, branches, vegetables, and seashells.  This course will direct the student to exercises that lead to more in-depth drawings.  Beginners will be encouraged to make a drawing during each class.  Advanced students have the choice to work on refining a drawing over the course of numerous classes.  Individual instruction will guide students to develop their drawing skills.  Group critiques offer learning from varied styles.  Please bring a sketchbook 14”x17” or larger.  Other basic materials will be provided.

Mat Pilates

Pilates is an exercise method is based on the guiding principles of the work of Joseph Pilates: control, centering, concentration, breath, precision and flow.  It creates a strong core, builds long lean muscles without bulk and improves posture, balance, flexibility and coordination.  The exercises are performed on mats on the floor; additional props are sometimes utilized but the emphasis is to work the body with itself.  No experience necessary.  Please bring a mat.

Here I am: Contemporary Jewish Stories from Around the World, compiled and edited by Marcia Lee Berkman and Elaine Marcus Starkman (Jewish Publication Society 1998), presents a very special collection of skillfully written and interesting plots, insightful themes, and fine structural and language choices.  In the process of reading and discussing a dozen stories (two each week), students will contrast and compare universal traits, geographical differences, and unique concerns.  Students are encouraged to read each story twice in preparation for lively discussion.  For the first session, please read “Irons and Diamonds” by Nina Sadur (Russia) on p.264 and “Expectations” by George Konrad (Hungary) on p.276.
