Hobbies and Edutainment

It is never too early to start your memoir.  By reminiscing out loud in class, answering provocative and probing questions, participating in group conversations to be recorded, and completing assignments each week, students will begin the process of organizing and presenting their life stories in writing.  At the end of the eight-week course, students will have the start of a full memoir.  Students from prior classes are welcome as we will be exploring new questions.

Explore your creative side by combining decoupage, collage, and your ideas!  Decoupage is the art of decorating an object with colored papers and clippings, applying special paint effects, gold leaf, and other adornments, and sealing the layers with varnish to give a finished, polished appearance.  In this four-week class, students will turn found objects, cut tissue paper, magazines, or photos into decorative works of 3-D art.  Tell your story on trays, wooden boxes, glass plates, or canvas to give as gifts or to keep.  No experience is necessary to enjoy this fun-filled and creative process. Supply List for Decoupage - Each student should bring scissors.  If you want, you can use your own photos that are color-xeroxed onto regular paper (not photo paper).  The instructor will bring magazines but if you want a certain subject, you can bring your own; also bring modpodge 8 or 16 oz. (can be purchase at any art supply store - either matte or gloss); Instructor will bring tissue paper in assorted colors and brushes...MOST IMPORTANT TO BRING:  an object to decoupage: picture frame, bird house, step stool, tray, cigar box (wood is preferred).

Genealogical research helps uncover, record and save family histories.  Increasingly, institutions are digitizing their records, making them available to anyone on the iInternet.  This research can be exciting, daunting, frustrating, but mostly rewarding.  It may affirm (or even refute) dates, relationships and other information that your family has long held.  It may enlarge your understanding of how and where they lived.  Finding and saving these records for your children and grandchildren is a gift to the future.  As a beginner in these interactive sessions, you will be guided through some of the resources and databases, absorb helpful guidelines, understand some of the pitfalls, and learn the steps that will help you get started.  We will spend as much time as possible with your individual searches during the class.  Once you get started on your research it will be hard to stop!  Please bring 3 essential tools to each class: your laptop, a magnifying glass and a calculator.
