This five-session course will cover poetry and plays penned in Irish and English from William Butler Yeats.  We will take an in-depth look at Yeats' extraordinary body of work: poems and plays. We will also consider why the critical response to his plays has often not equaled the response to his poems.  Any edition of Collected Poems of Yeats is fine; read as many as you can, in advance! The plays we'll read are : Deirdre, Cathleen ni Houlihan, and The Cat and the Moon.

French painter Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was one of the greatest creative figures of the nineteenth century.  Coming of age after the fall of Napoleon, he reconnected the present to the past on his own terms.  Delacroix produced an extraordinarily vibrant body of work, setting into motion a cascade of innovations that changed the course of art.  This exhibition (September 17, 2018 through January 6, 2019) will be the first comprehensive retrospective devoted to this amazing artist ever held in North America.  The exhibition, a joint project with the Musée du Louvre, will illuminate Delacroix's restless imagination through approximately 145 paintings, drawings, and prints, many never before seen in the United States.  It will unfold chronologically, encompassing the rich variety of themes that preoccupied the artist during his more than four decades of activity, including literature, history, religion, animals, and nature.

For the last fifty years, artists have explored the hidden operations of power and the symbiotic suspicion between the government and its citizens that haunts Western democracies.  Everything Is Connected: Art and Conspiracy (September 18, 2018 through January 6, 2019) will be the first major exhibition to tackle this perennially provocative topic.  It will trace the simultaneous development of two kinds of art about conspiracy.  The first half of the exhibition will comprise works by artists who hew strictly to the public record, uncovering hidden webs of deceit — from the shell corporations of a New York slumlord to vast, interconnected networks encompassing politicians, businessmen, and arms dealers.  In the second part, other artists will dive headlong into the fever dreams of the disaffected, creating fantastical works that nevertheless uncover uncomfortable truths in an age of information overload and weakened trust in institutions.  Featuring seventy works by thirty artists in media ranging from painting and sculpture to photography, video, and installation art, from 1969 to 2016, Everything Is Connected: Art and Conspiracy will present an alternate history of postwar and contemporary art that is also an archaeology of our troubled times

Epic Abstraction: Pollock to Herrera (November 27, 2018 through December 31, 2021) will explore large-scale abstract painting, sculpture, and assemblage, from the 1940s to the twenty-first century, through works from the Met collection and special loans.  Enhanced within the setting of Marcel Breuer's 1966 modernist architectural masterpiece, icons of abstract expressionism, such as Pollock's drip painting “No. 28, 1950” and Louise Nevelson's monumental “Mrs. N's Palace”, will be put into conversation with works by lesser-known artists, such as Judit Reigl and along new acquisitions like Mark Bradford's dynamic “Duck Walk” (2016).  Many of the artists to be represented in the exhibition worked in large formats not only to explore aesthetic elements of line, color, shape, and texture, but also to activate scale's metaphoric potential to evoke expansive ideas and subjects, including time, history, nature, and existential concerns of the self.  An entire room devoted to Mark Rothko's meditative compositions will offer an immersion in color, feeling, and sensation.  In varied ways, Epic Abstraction will suggest the long and rich legacy of abstract expressionism, an unavoidable touchstone for much of the art that followed.
