Discover some of the most intriguing Victorian scandals that affected royalty, artists, writers, politicians, and aristocracy in two self-contained lectures.  The November class covers the first half of Queen Victoria’s reign and includes the history of the railway king and his Ponzi scheme; the Eglinton tournament of 1839; Charles Dickens and his domestic arrangements; the shameful treatment at court of Lady Flora Hastings, a lady in waiting, and a court that scandalously enforced rigid protocols.  The December class covers the latter part of the reign and includes the unpopularity of John Brown, Queen Victoria’s servant; the rivalry between Benjamin Disraeli and Gladstone; the famous 1878 court case between Whistler and Ruskin; the failed career of Lord Randolph Churchill; a stately home gambling fiasco that was allegedly perpetrated in the presence of the Prince of Wales; and the scandal that surrounded the Prince’s circle of glamorous mistresses, one of whom threatened to publish his letters.
