ClassGraphic

This series explores the visual arts through an analytical study of monuments and masterworks, including paintings, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts from ancient Greece to the present day.  Courses are grouped by period with the goal of establishing visual literacy through in-depth investigations of original works of art. The online class descriptions contain lists of suggested readings (selected original source materials and excerpts from books available at libraries) and films for students to access on their own prior to class; films are available on DVD at libraries or via various internet streaming services.  Register for any of the individual in-town lectures or any series that includes in-town lectures plus walking tour. The “Introduction to Visual Literacy” class is strongly recommended as a precursor to any of the subsequent lectures.

This lectures and walking tour will focus on The Parthenon: Art and Architecture in Periclean Athens

Readings: Thucydides, “Funeral Oration of Pericles;” Plutarch, “Life of Pericles;” Pollitt, J.J., Art and Experience in Classical Greece, (Cambridge University Press 1972), Ch. 3, “The World Under Control,” pp. 64-110; Pollio, Vitruvius, The Ten Books of Architecture, trans. M. H. Morgan (Dover Publications 1960), Book IV, Ch. 1, “The Origins of the Three Orders,” pp. 102-6.
