Just how does suspense unfold? Can a seemingly ordinary situation create the same type of tension we associate with a mystery? How do we predict the impact of a character’s choices and sort out the important details from the distractions and red herrings? The foreign and domestic films to be shown and discussed in this course will fulfill our fascination with the uneasy state of anticipation. Film screenings will include six of the following movies: The Keeper of Lost Causes (2013), Out of the Past (1947), Citizen X (1995), Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), Shadows and Fog (1991), The Crying Game (1992), Frozen River (2008), The Nights of Cabiria (1957), and A Separation (2011).
