ID : 7655
« back to classes page

This four part series showcases three prominent mid-nineteenth century painters of modern life and culminates in a tour of impressionist artwork in the Met’s collection. The class will explore the work of Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Claude Monet within the larger context of realism, impressionism and post-impressionism. Seen through the lens of the Industrial Revolution, the evolution of the Salon System, the Haussmanization of Paris, the development of photography and the rise of the bourgeois class, we will witness how these artists changed the very nature, purpose and definition of art. Our discussion of the work of Manet, Degas and Monet will also trace the origins of modernism while spending time with some of the most beloved pieces in the Met’s collection. Classes may be taken individually; walking tour is limited to those who take all three preview classes due to space constraints (18 maximum).
