The Book of Genesis concludes with the success of Joseph and the migration of his Israelite family to Egypt. What follows is the story of the enslavement of the Israelite people. Exodus describes their subjugation, their divine redemption and the revelation of God’s law at Mount Sinai. This course will examine the Book of Exodus, a fundamental source of both Jewish and Christian religious traditions. The class will try to recognize what the reader was intended to understand from the text and the numerous ways both Jews and Christians have interpreted it over several thousand years. The only required text is the Bible, and any translation will do.
