This class will provide an understanding of the nonprofit sector and the essential tools for making a nonprofit organization effective. We will begin with a brief historical overview of the nonprofit sector and explore its role in American society today. We will then analyze the various components of an effective nonprofit organization, including, but not limited to, mission statements, program development, staffing and volunteers, evaluation, and fundraising. In addition to these topics, we will look at the Board of Directors of organizations and their role as it relates to accountability, transparency, and financial responsibility. We will learn the tools that nonprofits use to increase their impact and organizational effectiveness and efficiency. Each student will identify a nonprofit organization in their area to use as a model/example for assignments.
