In anticipation of the Met’s upcoming 150th anniversary, this lecture explores the history of the museum’s holdings through an in-depth look at the men and women behind the collections, whose contributions created one of the world’s most important artistic institutions.  Moving through the galleries from a number of the Met’s curatorial departments, the lecture will consider the methods and motivations of major philanthropists, including J.P. Morgan, the Rockefeller family, Robert Lehman, Louisine Havemeyer, Jane Wrightsman, Gerald Cantor, and Leonard Lauder among others.
