The belief systems of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism intersect on a sliver of land on the easternmost shore of the Mediterranean, known to historians and theologians as Ancient Israel. Our knowledge of this land is mired in controversy. Did the Israelites conquer this land, also known as Canaan, or were the Israelites themselves Canaanites? Were there Hebrews in Egypt and did they set forth on an Exodus to Canaan? And what about King David, his palace in Jerusalem and his conquests? Does the Bible recount the history of a real king, or does it weave a legend like that of King Arthur? By studying a variety of source materials including, ancient inscriptions, archeological findings, Biblical citations and current scholarly monographs, the course will provide current answers to these questions.
