« back to classes page

Amelia Bassano, an alluring and brilliant Conversa woman, was believed to have been Shakespeare's “Dark Lady” and possible collaborator on his plays.  This lecture delves into how knowledge of her suspected involvement might change our image of Shylock and the intended meaning of The Merchant of Venice.  The class will also explore her history in the context of the forced conversions of Jews during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
