From Spirituals to Swing – Jazz and the Popular Front

ID : 7063
« back to classes page
On December 23, 1938, jazz impresario John Hammond staged the first of his From Spirituals to Swing concerts at Carnegie Hall, presenting a range of authentic black music to an integrated audience.  The concert was among the first to be financed by New Masses, the journal of the United States Communist Party, which positioned the concert squarely in one of the hottest political battles of the 1930s.  This course will examine the fascinating and diverse program that bridged a racial divide, but also sparked an enduring controversy as to the proper role for jazz music in the American politics.
