Here I am: Contemporary Jewish Stories from Around the World, compiled and edited by Marcia Lee Berkman and Elaine Marcus Starkman (Jewish Publication Society 1998), presents a very special collection of skillfully written and interesting plots, insightful themes, and fine structural and language choices.  In the process of reading and discussing a dozen stories (two each week), students will contrast and compare universal traits, geographical differences, and unique concerns.  Students are encouraged to read each story twice in preparation for lively discussion.  For the first session, please read “Irons and Diamonds” by Nina Sadur (Russia) on p.264 and “Expectations” by George Konrad (Hungary) on p.276.
