Nineteenth Century American Stories: Hawthorne and Melville

Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville incomparably penetrated our history and psyche.  Students will read and discuss Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” (1835) and “The Birthmark” (1843) as well as Melville’s Billy Budd.(1924).  Instructor will supply copies of the short stories but students should bring their own copy of Billy Budd (any edition).
