ID : 6962
« back to classes page

In an 1820 letter to Lafayette lamenting the Missouri Compromise, James Madison referred to “the dreadful fruitfulness of the original sin of the African trade.”  Since then, many others have used the phrase “America’s original sin” in reference to slavery and the compromises reached by America’s founding fathers when they established a new nation.  This course will address the historical context of slavery, its legacy of segregation and racism, and its continuing influence on American society.
