« back to classes page
Although jazz was born in New Orleans in the 1910s, by the 1920s the music had become urban and a part of a new African American cultural vanguard taking shape in Harlem.  This course looks at jazz as the musical soundtrack to the Harlem Renaissance, one of the most important cultural movements of the twentieth century.  Study composers including Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Mary Lou Williams, Eubie Blake, and others.
