Why Does The Building Look Like That?
Contemporary Architecture In New York City |
The past fifteen years represent a
dynamic period for architecture in New York City, marked by a rich
variety of design projects that have redefined many of the city's
neighborhoods. This course will study this diverse range of works to
better understand the forms, origins, and attitudes of contemporary
architecture.
Walking tours will highlight several of the buildings
discussed in the lectures. Potential walking tour locations are the
Columbus Circle area, including Alice Tully Hall, the Museum of Arts
and Design, the Hearst Building, MOMA and the American Folk Art
Museum, and the West Village / Chelsea area, with highlights
including the High Line, the Gehry Headquarters, the Standard Hotel,
and some residential developments in the area.
Students have to provide their own
transportation to walking tour sites in Manhattan. |
